Renewal & expiry
A name is kept because somebody decided to keep it.
Every name on this tag is registered to Stanislav Sauliak, so the renewal is his to make. He takes it by hand, name by name, before the date rather than on it. No part of this runs on a repeating instruction.
- Term: 1 year
- Names for others: none
- Last day to recover: 95
1The decision
No recurring payment exists here and no card is stored. Ahead of each expiry date the name is looked at on its own, against whatever it is actually being used for, and one of two things follows: another 1 year, or nothing at all.
Those dates are tracked by Stanislav himself, and that is the fragile part of running a small portfolio by hand. A name missed on its date is not an inconvenience to be fixed later: past day 95 it is gone, and the next person who wants it is free to take it.
Letting a name expire is a real choice. No money is lost and nothing still in use is broken. The only bad version is the accidental one.
Each registration runs for 1 year from the day it is created; the registry record gives the exact expiry date.
2If one of these names were somebody else’s
Not one is, and taking names on for other people is not offered here. A ceiling applies regardless: fifty names or 5% of the tag, whichever is the smaller. If one were ever filed, the list below would attach to it, and every item on that list would be owed to the registrant, not to the registrar. Channel used for notices: by email to the contact address held on the record.
- At least 30 days before expiry
An expiry notice, by email to the address on the record. That figure is Nominet’s and applies to all tag types alike.
- Before the registration, and before each renewal
Nominet’s terms of registration made known to the registrant.
- Only when asked
No renewal on anybody’s behalf without instruction. Silence would renew nothing.
- On request
A handover to a different registrar, done quickly and for nothing.
If the address on the record has gone stale, the notice lands nowhere. That is the ordinary way a name gets lost, and it is why the registry insists those details stay current.
3Day by day around the expiry date
These are Nominet’s stages for a .UK domain that nobody renews, and they apply whichever registrar holds the tag. Move the slider to see where such a domain stands on any day. Days count from the expiry date.
The same stages in words
- Before expiryEverything works. This is the window in which the name is reviewed and the decision taken.
- Days 0 to 30The registration has ended, though the name usually keeps working. Renewing it at this point is still ordinary.
- Days 30 to 90The name is switched off, so any website or email on it stops working. A renewal still brings it all back.
- Days 90 to 95Renewal is no longer possible, by any registrar. The name waits to be deleted.
- After day 95Nominet deletes the registration and the name is free for anyone to take. The previous registrant has no special claim.
These stages come from Nominet’s expiry process for .UK names and apply whoever holds the tag.
Changing on 9 February 2027. On that day Nominet moves .UK to a new system with different timings. A name that is not renewed stops working on its expiry date. It can be renewed for 45 days after that, then brought back for another 30 days, and is deleted 5 days later. This page will be updated when the change happens.
4Letting a name go
No cancellation happens and no sale takes place. A name that is finished with is simply not renewed.
- Live services come off the name before the date arrives, so the expiry itself takes nothing down with it.
- The date comes and goes with nothing done.
- After day 95 Nominet deletes the registration and the name is anyone’s to take.
From that point anyone may register it and this registrar has no further claim on it. This is the usual finish for a .UK name, not a mishap.
5Moving a name off this tag
There is no closed season on transfers: a name can leave for another registrar on any day of its term, the day before expiry included, and the registry charges nothing to do it.
- The new registrar supplies its Nominet tag.
- The entry is pushed across to it.
- From then on the notices and invoices come from them.
Nothing about the entry or its date alters. Only the registrar changes.
From 9 February 2027 Nominet replaces the tag change with a transfer code, issued within 5 days of the request and free of charge. The receiving registrar has 14 days to use it before it runs out.
